Art With a Heart is a community-based charity that empowers individuals through expressive arts. We create inclusive and supportive spaces where participants can grow, express themselves, and thrive creatively. Our summer programs provide a meaningful opportunity for young artists to explore their emotions, build friendships, and develop their confidence through art.
Position Overview
Art With a Heart is looking for a dedicated and compassionate Special Programs Instructor for Persons with Disabilities to join our summer programming team for an 8-week contract. Reporting to the Recreational Activities Program Coordinator, this role plays a key part in planning and facilitating our Adults with Disabilities Expressive Arts Summer Programs.
Key Responsibilities
- In collaboration with the Recreational Activities Program Coordinator, design and implement activities that meet the diverse needs of participants.
- Create adaptations and accommodations to ensure the sessions are accessible and inclusive for all that attend.
- Create a supportive and positive environment for participants, caregivers, and families, addressing individual participant needs to ensure meaningful engagement.
- Work directly with participants to support creativity and self-expression while building connections.
- Support the development of program materials and instructions, ensuring they are clear, accessible, and meet AODA standards.
- Support participants in achieving personal and program goals, prioritizing mental wellness and person-centered approaches.
- Provide flexible, individualized support and assistance based on participant needs.
- Prepare facilities, set up furniture and/or equipment for scheduled activities/events and clean up after program finishes.
- Liaise with caregivers and support networks to ensure the programming aligns with participant goals.
- Uphold Art With a Heart’s mission of creativity, accessibility, and community care.
- This role will have to attend locations off site from our main location. Transportation will be required.
Qualifications
- Previous experience working with persons with disabilities.
- Previous experience in facilitating expressive arts programming or related experience
- Post-Secondary education in Social Science, Education, Art or related programs.
- Commitment to working in a socially inclusive environment, responding with sensitivity and personal awareness to the diverse needs of members including visible and non-visible dimensions of diversity.
- Standard First Aid & CPR-C certification (or willingness to obtain).
- Vulnerable Sector Check (required upon hiring).
